I used to give my students a homework list that’s good for one week but I give homework every day. This school year I decided to give a homework packet every Monday or the first school day the week and collect that packet every Friday or the last school day of the week. I decided to do it this way to make it easier for me to track homeworks and to give enough time for students to finish their homework.

First page of the homework packet includes our class bulletin. The header of this packet also includes our classroom blog address. It includes all benchmark that we will be discussing for that week, reminders, announcements, spelling words for the week and my star students. Star students do show-and-tell about themselves – interests, favorite book, etc – every for 5 to 10 minutes after recess.

Second page of the homework packet is the homework list with the list of their daily homework. My students have been reading AR books, taking AR tests and completing reading log since 1st Quarter and will continue until the end of the school year. They also have AR Math homework every week. In addition to those homework, they have other homework – either review on previously discussed benchmarks or benchmarks we are currently studying.

I do my best to include the benchmarks on every homework that they have.

The students spelling packet includes multi-syllable words/sight words or frequently used words that they are reciting every day. I let them write their spelling words again, let them write those words alphabetically, identify the vowel letters and consonant letters in every spelling words then I let them write five sentences on any 5 words they choose. During the first to second quarter, I let them write 1 sentence on every spelling words and let them write every word five times. When I saw great improvement on their spelling scores I removed those in their homework. We review this spelling words everyday after their show-and-tell.
The next pages of this homework packet include one homework for math, one for science and/or social studies and language arts. They also have the Accelerated Math homework – 5 benchmarks/objectives with 5 problems every benchmark.
So far, 99% of my students are submitting homework every Friday. I also get excuses but I don’t accept any more excuses instead I let my student (always the same student) call home and ask his/her relatives to drop the homework to school. If I don’t receive the homework by 1130pm, I print out another copy of the homework packet and let my student complete the homework until he/she completes it – that means missed field day, movie day and other fun Friday activities.
